“I wouldn’t advise anyone to make BHO at home any more than I would advise them to make land mines at home,” said Michael Backes of Abatin Wellness Center, .“No one ever died from making water hash.”
THE DRAMA WITH CONCENTRATES IN CALIFORNIA CONTINUES….
BHO-BUTANE EXTRACTED HASH OIL
I get a lot of questions about my feelings on BHO…I say my feelings don’t matter, because my personal opinion has no consequence for you, but the cops have their own opinion and so does the State of California and they have some harsh penalties for you if you are caught making or with products to make BHO…so I wanted to share just a little bit with you.
‘Dabbing’(as it’s called) has turned into a very popular marijuana-made concentrate to medicate with and has taken over the industry , some people don’t even smoke flowers anymore because of how much they enjoy the results of BHO!!!!! The THC content is high(higher than ice/water hash) in BHO (even when made with a low grade flower, shake or stems the thc content is surprisingly still pretty good) and the cost of making it is low- it is ideal for an industry like ours. Patients are happy with the results they get and dispensaries are happy because it flies off the shelves faster than anything else.
When a patient gets their recommendation in California per Prop215 they are allowed to grow and posses limited amounts of marijuana. With that marijuana grown a lot of patients will make their own hash………even though the state considers the maki g of it illegal.. Very odd- how does it show up in clubs in so many forms then??
How many Prop215 patients are aware that if they make BHO(Concetrates with Butane/C02 Solvents) from the same flowers that they make other forms of hash with, that they could face jail time and fines???? Not many!!! Are your eyebrows perking up a little bit???? Let’s go over this!
Penalties for making BHO in California:
3-7 years in prison and a possible $50,000 fine for manufacturing!!
Section 11379.6(a) states: “Except as otherwise provided by law, every person who compounds, converts, produces, derives, processes, or prepares, either directly or indirectly by chemical extraction or independently by means of chemical synthesis, any controlled substance – shall be punished by imprisonment in the state prison for three, five, or seven years and by a fine up to $50,000″
Now, this (in the mind of hash-makers and growers) makes no sense and only adds to the confusion, especially considering EVERY DISPENSARY I know of has wax available and in several forms: BHO/C02/ISO ….. and not only that but SO MANY PEOPLE are throwing caution to the wind and making it themselves in an unsafe environment (indoors, no fan/ventilation ..) which has lead to many injuries and even some reported deaths in 2012 due to spills, malfunctions or major in-house explosions with damage that is reminiscent of what a pipe bomb could do.
Let me be clear:
According to current CA laws patients can possess BHO but cannot make it or
be caught with any tools to make it (glass tubes and fuel tanks) in their possession……
SO PLEASE BE CAREFUL !
Below is my opinion. It is an optional read for you.

Any questions, any time. Don’t be shy, there are no stupid ones and I don’t know everything. I could reply with “I don’t know” but I will always have a LINK TO HELP and we can BOTH learn!!!! Thanks again!!!
MY OPINION:
For advocates it makes our job a little bit harder. How can I explain that this is medicine when we are using this ‘darkened’ gooey substance, a torch and a glass on glass piece without them(non-smoking Americans) thinking it is similar to heroin??? We have been out here fighting for so many years promoting the use of marijuana as an option for pain and other ailments in our society, not something that causes an uproar–and this BHO rage is cause for alarm. The posts of experiences (probably smoking BHO made by a novice) are disturbing and so are the side effects…What frightens me most is Patients are reporting the inability to stop dabbing and switch back to flowers. I understand that my bubble/full melt may be less in THC% than your average BHO but I can always walk away from it, I can put it down and smoke flowers- no problem and be feeling just as good. I worry for those who cannot do the same….with that said, one major issue I have is that the companies making this very popular butane fuel will not tell us ALL of the particles in it-yes, it’s main ingredient is butane but what else? Maybe if they told us that, we could figure out what it is people are addicted to because as we know; it isn’t the marijuana. I do not smoke BHO for fear of the unknown. I know what I am smoking when I smoke flowers and bubble/full melt hash but since I don’t with BHO I can’t trust it. Therefore I don’t smoke it. I have seen everything from permanent resin stains on teeth to an infection of the lungs and those are alarming to me(they could be smoking low-grade BHO but still), enough to think twice. I understand why patients love it, they can spend $120.00 a month vs $500.00 on flower. I also have had a patient tell me it helps him with his epilepsy-that he has way less long-lasting seizures now, to me that is incredible so who am I to keep him from his BHO….?
I hope all of you understand I do not judge you for smoking bho, if it helps you that is all I care about, always!!!! But I do think we need to all be aware; just because it is made from a flower doesn’t mean it is still just as natural as smoking one.
Thank you, again, so much for taking the time to read the opinion portion, as you did not have to. I hope you understand I support all MMJ patients and their needs. The only reason I even added my opinion was because people ask so often, so I thought I would give a clear answer.
Thanks for being Medifaded,
Chris
