NEWS UPDATE : LOS ANGELES MMJ!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Los Angeles City Clerk Monday gave a group of medical marijuana proponents a green light to gather signatures for a ballot measure intended to allow about 100 pot dispensaries to remain open in the city.

According to an official summary, the ordinance would allow groups of five or fewer to jointly grow and share marijuana. Collectives of six or more would be technically prohibited under the ordinance. But the city would barred from prosecuting a select 100 or so dispensaries which meet certain conditions, including having opened before Sept. 14, 2007, when the city first tried to place a moratorium on new pot shops.

The so-called limited immunity plan is supported by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 770, which represents about 500 workers at 50
dispensaries, among others.

In addition to having opened prior to the September 2007 cutoff, collectives must not have ceased operations for 90 days or more except to relocate or in response to federal prosecution; must have no access from adjacent residential zoned lots; and must pass annual police department background checks.

Qualifying dispensaries would have 300 days to move to locations that are a certain distance from schools, parks and other designated places.

A plan by City Councilman Paul Koretz similar to the proposed ballot initiative is also moving through the city legislative process.

Backers of the proposed ballot measure have until Dec. 7 to gather 41,138 valid signatures to put the measure before voters on the May 21, 2013, general election ballot.

The move comes less than one month after medical marijuana proponents were successful in getting the City Council to repeal a ban on medical marijuana dispensaries.

The City Council in July had approved an ordinance banning all storefront medical marijuana dispensaries but allowing patients and licensed caregivers to grow their own cannabis. The so-called “gentle ban” ordinance also allowed three or fewer parties to collectively grow pot.

The Committee to Protect Patients and Neighborhoods—a coalition of medical marijuana advocates comprising Americans for Safe Access, the Greater Los Angeles Collective Alliance and UFCW Local 770—subsequently gathered the necessary signatures needed to put a referendum of the law on a city election ballot.

The City Council conceded that a referendum was sure to pass, the council voted 11-2 in favor of repealing the law instead of putting it to voters.

Did You Know?

Little Known Facts in the Medical Marijuana Debate

  1. Marijuana is classified as a Schedule 1 drug by the 1970 Controlled Substances Act, meaning it is considered to have a “high potential for abuse,” “no currently accepted medical use,” and “a lack of accepted safety.” Rescheduling marijuana to the less restrictive Schedule II or III (45 KB) remains a contentious issue.
  2. The University of Mississippi has grown marijuana (including a placebo with virtually no THC) for US government-approved research since 1968. Each year the university grows 1.5 acres, 6.5 acres, or none, depending upon demand.
  3. The first cannabis-based prescription medicine, Sativex, was launched in the United Kingdom on June 21, 2010. Sativex is a mouth spray approved to treat spasticity in patients with Multiple Sclerosis.
  4. Eight of the 10 states that had legalized medical marijuana by 2006 saw a decrease in teen use of marijuana from 1999 to 2006.
  5. The states with the three highest possession limits among the 17 states with legal medical marijuana are Oregon (24 plants), California (18 plants), and New Mexico (16 plants).
  6. Smoked or inhaled marijuana takes only a few minutes to reach the brain, where a series of cellular reactions occur that ultimately produce the “high” feeling. When eating or drinking marijuana, this process can take up to an hour.
  7. When swallowing marijuana (in teas, brownies, etc.), the main active ingredient, Delta-9-THC, is transformed by the liver into the more psychoactively powerful Delta-11-THC.
  8. In 1978 the US government started the Compassionate Investigational New Drug (IND) program. Although closed for new patients in 1991, it still supplies 320-360 marijuana cigarettes monthly to each of the four seriously ill patients remaining in the program.
  9. According to FDA data obtained by our filing of a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, marijuana was not reported as a primary cause of death at all between Jan. 1, 1997 to June 30, 2005 (the time for which the data were available).
  10. The US Department of Justice, in an Oct. 19, 2009 memo, advised federal prosecutors not to target medical marijuana patients whose actions are in compliance with the law in states that have legalized medical marijuana.
  11. Marijuana contains over 400 different identifiable chemical constituents, including steroids and Vitamin A.
  12. The British Lung Foundation reported in Nov. 2002 that 3-4 marijuana cigarettes a day are as dangerous to the lungs as 20 or more tobacco cigarettes a day.
  13. A UCLA study presented on May 24, 2006 found no association between marijuana and lung cancer, and it suggested that marijuana may even have “some protective effect.”
  14. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Administrative Law Judge Mary Ellen Bittner ruled on Feb. 12, 2007 that “there is currently an inadequate supply of marijuana available for research purposes.”
  15. The 1999 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, commissioned by the US government, recommended that under certain narrow conditions marijuana should be medically available to some patients, even though “numerous studies suggest that marijuana smoke is an important risk factor in the development of respiratory disease.”

Major Components of Cannabis

Major Components of Cannabis

  • Delta-9 Tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta-9 THC) – It is the main psychoactive component of cannabis with mild to moderate painkilling effects. It also helps treat nausea associate with cancer chemotherapy and to stimulate appetite. It induces feelings of euphoria. Potential side effects include accelerated heartbeat, panic, confusion, anxiety and possible paranoia.
  • Cannabidiol (CBD) – It is a major, non-psychoactive component of cannabis that helps shrink inflammation and reduce pain without inducing the euphoria effects of THC. It has been used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel diseases, psychotic disorders and epilepsy. Larger amounts of CBD can relax the mind and body without causing negative side effects associated with THC.
  • Cannabinol (CBN) – It is a secondary psychoactive component of cannabis. It is not associated with painkilling effects of THC or CBD. CBN is formed as THC ages. Unlike the euphoria effects of THC, CBN can induce headaches and a sense of lethargy.
  • Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) – It is found primarily in strains of African and Asian cannabis. THCV heightens the intensity of THC effects and the speed in which the component is delivered, but also causes the sense of euphoria to end sooner.

Brownies!!

MARIJUANA BROWNIES

OIL METHOD

Making Brownies at home with all of the normal items in your kitchen!!!!!!!!!

For brownies everyone suggests a different amount of marijuana to use but I think that really just depends on the quality of the meds; I prefer to use very potent meds and some people have left over trimmings or  some are using mid-grade meds.

If  you are going to use really potent marijuana be sure to a half ounce of your best and a full ounce if it is of trimmings and leaf or of a lower quality than what we would consider to be medical grade.

Always have a  really clean grinder to grind up the meds as much as possible into a very fine almost powdery-like texture.

Grab your wooden spoon and spread the marijuana into your 12 inch frying pan. Try to match your pan size to the size of whatever burner your stove has; that way it is cooked evenly throughout.  In regards to how much oil, be sure to just follow what the recipe asks for. Take that oil and pour it onto your powdery meds. Use a medium setting to get it to simmer; once it begins to simmer lower the burner to the lowest setting and leave it there for 2-6 hours- most patients do 2 hours first time around due to lack of patience… if you go a little longer, even just to 3-4 hours- I do believe the results are slightly more potent. Be sure to stir every 30-45 minutes!!!!!!

When it is done cooking you must now strain it through your coffee filter or a thin pasta strainerto remove any excess

marijuana/plant matter.

Once done straining you will have a medium to dark brown color oil and it should have no plant matter in it.

(The reason we  filtered out  plant matter was because there is no THC left ; it was extracted into the oil during the cooking process.)

Bake and Enjoy!!!

What is CBD?“…

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol  (CBD) is a cannabinoid found in Cannabis. It is a major constituent of the plant, representing up to 40% in its extracts..”-Source, Grlić, Ljubiša (1962). “A comparative study on some chemical and biological characteristics of various samples of cannabis resin”. Bulletin on Narcotics (UNODC) (3): 37–46.

In recent years medical marijuana has made some great advancement in the testing of this intriguing and powerful flower. CBD was found to be helpful as an antipsychotic when introduced to patients suffering schizophrenia. It was also found to alleviate inflammation, dystonia, nausea, PTSD as well as anxiety…and in some astonishing results it slowed the growth of cancer cells (in vitro) of breast cancer patients.

For years we have been trying to get marijuana recognized on the national scale in America for medicinal purposes and unfortunately the stigma attached to “getting high” or “being stoned” has halted those advances. With the introduction of CBD to the mainstream media it can be proven through scientific tests that CBD can help those in need of something other than the basic pharmaceuticals provided to them which can damage the liver and other organs that they may need to aid them in the healing of their disease/ illness.

Medical Marijuana has truly come a long way with some professors and doctors taking their time to begin doing strict studies that apply to their patients who are seeking alternative care. I believe in CBD myself and will be joining Project CBD in moving this medicine forward to the front lines of the medical marijuana discussion.

“….Our Intentions  Project CBD is a non-profit educational service dedicated to promoting and publicizing research into the medical utility of cannabidiol (CBD) and other components of the Cannabis plant. It was conceived by two journalists who have been covering the medical marijuana movement / industry in the pages of O’Shaughnessy’s. We think the reintroduction of CBD-rich Cannabis into the grassroots supply warrants special focus. We support the Society of Cannabis Clinicians‘ effort to collect, aggregate and publish data from patients to determine patterns of efficacy—or lack of efficacy…”-projectcbd.org

HOW DOES CBD COUNTER ANXIETY?
A new study by Jose A. S. Crippa and a team of Brazilian investigators confirms that symptoms of Social Anxiety Disorder can be reduced by treatment with CBD —and identifies areas of the brain involved in the process. The paper by Crippa et al, “Neural basis of anxiolytic effects of cannabidiol in generalized social anxiety disorder: a preliminary report,” was published online Sept. 9 in the Journal of Psychopharmacology. Ten men with severe Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD), ages 20 to 33, participated in the study, which was conducted at the University of Sao Paulo. Crystalline CBD from THC Pharm in Frankfurt was used. Prior to undergoing a neuroimaging procedure to measure blood flow in the brain, the subjects were given either 400 mg of CBD dissolved in corn oil and packed in a gel cap, or a placebo gel cap. A week later they were given the alternative treatment. The investigators assumed that the neuroimaging —Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), which involves insertion of an intravenous tube and observation by a technician deploying a high-tech apparatus— was in itself an anxiety-producing event. Subjects recorded their anxiety levels before, during, and after the neuroimaging by means of a “Visual Analogue Mood Scale (VAMS).” The researchers were able to correlate these subjective reports with blood-flow activity measured in the brain. “CBD was associated with significantly decreased anxiety,” they concluded. They observed reduced radioactive tracer intake in the left parahippocampal gyrus, the hippocampus, and the inferior temporal gyrus. They saw increased uptake in the right posterior cingulated gyrus. “These results suggest that CBD reduces anxiety in SAD and that this is related to its effects on activity in limbic and paralimbic brain areas,” according to Crippa. If CBD-rich Cannabis exerts similar effects, Crippa’s findings suggest that it can be useful in decreasing anxiety. (Source: ProjectCBD.org)

HOW DOES IT HELP WITH APPETITE?
Allan Frankel, MD, is pursuing two goals that he sees as related —large-scale production of standardized CBD-rich tinctures, and a “Statewide Collective” that will arrange for non-profit distribution. Frankel has also been conducting an “n-of-1″ trial to test the effect of CBD on appetite.
”Just as THC increases our appetite, as in the munchies,” says Frankel, “CBD suppresses our appetite. Personally, I wanted to lose a few pounds so I’ve started using CBD cookies made by the nurse at Statewide Collective. They each have 1 cc of a 13mg/6mg CBD/THC preparation which I take in the a.m. I’ve also made a tincture by placing the same dose in a 12-ounce bottle of water. Both effectively kill my appetite nearly completely for four to six hours, and moderately for 24 hours.”
Frankel, adds, “There is one huge exception to the rule that CBD suppresses appetite —but it’s a blessing, not a problem. There are many people who have difficulty eating due to a high-anxiety state –head spinning. For these patients, when their anxiety and that vague, sick feeling in their chest goes away following CBD administration, their appetite soon increases and their anxiety pretty much vanishes.
”THC is the better appetite stimulant for Cancer and HIV patients, in general; but physicians must ask in detail about the appetite issue as well as the patient’s emotional state before recommending which cannabinoid should predominate in their medication.(Source: ProjectCBD.org)

“…..CBD is the most versatile tool in the Cannabis plant’s kit, according to the Halent chart. It “reduces pain, slows bacteria growth, reduces blood sugar levels, reduces nausea and vomiting, reduces seizures and convulsions, reduces inflammation, reduces risk of artery blockage, inhibits cancer growth, treats psoriasis, is tranquilizing, suppresses muscle spasms, relieves anxiety, promotes bone growth, reduces function in the immune system, reduces small intestine contractions, retards nervous system degeneration, and reduces vascular tension.” Reference to CBD as an anti-depressant is omitted.
The chart was developed by analytic chemist Don Land based on studies published in peer-reviewed journals. The 23 cannabinoids and terpenoids it refers to are the ones Halent is testing for.
Although the chart implies that the ability of the listed cannabinoids and terpenoids to provide the specified effects has been well established, the evidence of benefit ranges from very strong to very slight. Establishing (or disproving) efficacy was the impetus for both Project CBD and the SCC survey.
Halent plans to track patients’ responses to CBD-rich Cannabis and strains containing other compounds of interest. They’re undoubtedly aware that telling people what to expect from a given type of Cannabis will influence the effects reported, and that peer-reviewed journals would not publish data skewed in this way.
I say “Skew it.” So what if the placebo effect accounts for 15 percent —or even 30 percent— of the reported benefit? If positive expectations alter brain chemistry in a way that makes drugs more effective, why go to great lengths to block positive expectations?
It’s damn arrogant of the medical establishment to define the double-blind placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial as “the gold standard of research,” given all the deadly drugs the FDA has approved based on such trials. Corporate biomedicine is corrupt. Their most prestigious journals are full of ghost-written papers, they exclude studies showing adverse effects… Honest anecdotal evidence is far preferable to superficial rigor.
As I write this at the winter solstice, the New York Times is belatedly informing readers that numerous, rock-solid studies point to Tylenol as a causal factor in asthma
But don’t let ‘em have any marijuana!
